Ignite the Spirit was founded in New York five days after the terror attacks that affected everyone in our country. Being there, and seeing the incredible outpouring of support in a time of such tremendous need was a humbling and moving experience. It made me think about my hometown, Chicago, a city I love, a city with such magnificence and yet, so much need. I gathered with a few of my fellow firemen, and after many days and nights of discussion and reflection, Ignite the Spirit was born.

Since our founding in 2003, we have provided both emotional and monetary support to our brothers and sisters of the Chicago Fire Department and their families facing various hardships. To date, over 100 families have been the beneficiaries of Ignite the Spirit, and we are just beginning!

This spring, 12 dedicated men and women will ride their bikes from Los Angeles to Myrtle Beach, SC to support pediatric cancer research through the work of the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation. While this will be the first time that we will ride Coast to Coast, long bike treks are not new to Ignite the Spirit. Over the past two years, our multi-day bike rides have raised over $120,000. The support of our contributors has been nothing short of amazing. Through various fundraising activities such as dinner dances, rooftop sporting events, golf outings, and our most popular event, the yearly fireman’s calendar, we have raised awareness and much needed money. In addition to our fundraising activities, we also host a holiday toy drive for three local children’s hospitals, in which the toys are delivered by firemen dressed in full gear! The smiles on the kids’ faces are beyond heartwarming, and serve as a reminder that we are making a difference in Chicago.

At times it is hard to imagine that in just a few short years, Ignite the Spirit has been able to accomplish so much, and yet, each day we are reminded that we need to do more, we can do more. The support we have received is truly overwhelming, and we are forever grateful. But there is more to do. To that end, we hope that you will continue to support our efforts. But just as important, we hope you will help us in getting the word out to others who may be unfamiliar with Ignite the Spirit and our various initiatives. With added support, we can continue to make a difference for our brothers and sisters of the Chicago Fire Department and their families.
